Before
using any Voxwire MeetingRoom, please ensure that your analog headset is properly
connected to your computer.
Identifying the headset jack plugs
Your analog headset has two 3.5mm (1/8 inch) audio jack plugs at the
end of the cord. One plug is for the microphone and the other is for the headphones.
You need
to know which is which so that you can plug them into the correct socket in
your computer's soundcard.
The headphones plug:
- is usually colored black
- sometimes has a word embossed on the plastic of the plug, such as 'phones'
- sometimes can be seen to have two smaller wires
leading from it rather than a single smaller wire
The microphone plug:
- is normally a different color - usually either red or
blue
- sometimes has a word embossed on the plastic of the plug, such as 'mic'
- sometimes can be seen to have a single smaller wire leading from
it, rather than two smaller wires
If you are still in doubt, you should be able to find more information in
the packaging of your headset.
Identifying the correct plugs in your computer
To use your analog computer headset, you must have two 3.5mm (1/8
inch) audio jacks on the back of your pc. However, occasionally,
they may be located elsewhere, such as the front of the PC. Check carefully
for the appropriate plugs on the back of your PC before you look anywhere
else. If your PC does not have these plugs, then your PC probably does
not have a soundcard. A soundcard is needed to use the Voxwire MeetingRooms
and
your
computer headset.
Having located the plugs, you need to identify the microphone socket and the
headphones or 'line out' socket.
The microphone socket:
- on recently-produced computers, it is usually colored
red or pastel pink
- sometimes has an icon of a microphone printed or embossed
beside it
- sometimes has the word 'MIC' printed or embossed beside it
The line out or headphones socket:
- on recently-produced computers, it is usually
colored green or pastel green
- sometimes has a 'line out' icon printed
or embossed beside it (this icon is a central dot with 'sound waves' radiating
from it, and an arrow
that goes
from the central dot outwards; the equivalent icon with an arrow
going in to the central dot is the 'line in' icon, which you don't want)
- sometimes
has an icon of headphones printed or embossed beside it
- sometimes has 'OUT',
'LINE OUT', or 'PHONES' printed or embossed beside it
Here are three examples. In each example, the red socket is the microphone
socket and the green socket is the line out socket.
Plugging in headset
Plug the headphones plug from your headset into the headphones or line out
socket of your computer, and the microphones plug from your headset into the
microphone socket of your computer.
The best position for the microphone
The microphone should be the width of two fingers away from your mouth for
best reception.
Problems?
If you can't find the plugs on the back of the PC
Try looking in your computer's manual as this usually has a diagram showing
you where all the plugs are located.
Laptop computers with non-standard plugs
Some laptop computers have non-standard audio plugs that are not large enough
to take ordinary plugs. If this is the case with yours, please contact your
computer supplier to ask about their recommended headsets or plug adapters
If you have more than one sound card
You need to plug the headphones into the plugs for the main sound card. Voxwire
MeetingRooms uses the preferred playback and recording devices, which you
can check in the Multimedia section of Control Panel under the 'Audio' tab.
Only one jack for the speakers. Is there a way to switch between the
headset and speakers without having to plug/unplug at the back of the PC?
Yes. You can use either a "Y" splitter cable or a switch
box. The "Y" splitter
cable enables you to plug in both your headset and external speakers using
your single audio jack.
Or a switch box can enable you to switch between the headset
and external speakers.
One of the best is from Andrea Electronics. Check out the MC-100 Multimedia
Control Switch.
This ultra modern little gray box allows you to easily switch between your
desktop speakers and your analog microphone headset. The MC-100 makes it easy
to connect/disconnect
the microphone without reaching around the back of the CPU box. It has a handy
headset-volume knob and an auxiliary power supply built in. Both can be purchased
at most computer or electronics supply store.
